What is the Major System?
The Major System is a mnemonic technique that converts numbers into words by mapping each digit to a consonant sound.
Vowels and the sounds W, H, Y are ignored — they are free to use anywhere. Only consonant sounds matter.
By turning abstract numbers into concrete images, you can remember long sequences effortlessly.
The Mapping
| Digit | Sounds | Mnemonic |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | S, Z | zero |
| 1 | T, D, Th | one downstroke |
| 2 | N | two downstrokes |
| 3 | M | three downstrokes |
| 4 | R | r in four |
| 5 | L | L = Roman 50 |
| 6 | Sh, Ch, J, Zh | J mirrored = 6 |
| 7 | K, G (hard), Ng | K has two 7s |
| 8 | F, V | f in script = 8 |
| 9 | P, B | P mirrored = 9 |
How Encoding Works
To encode a number, find a word whose consonant sounds match the digits in order.
Notice how vowels are ignored — only the consonant sounds determine the digits.
